"Sound of Music is
'Moog'"
MUSIC TO MOOG BY (Audio Fidelity) is a gas. "Moog," we learned from the breezy little booklet that comes with the record, rhymes with "vogue," and it's the name of the man who constructed that incredible electronic synthesizing machine which comes close to duplicating almost any sound. It involves thousands of miniature solid state circuits and the whole electronic mess is controlled by a keyboard and switchboard. By adjusting and tuning the sound generators, a "player" can produce the sounds of most orchestral instruments (up to 12 simultaneously). The machine can also produce animal sounds, even wind and water sounds. Well, Gershon Kingsley, composer, arranger and conductor, has discovered the Moog and this fantastic album is an example of what he has done with it. We think he's a genius because this is the first time we've liked Moog music. It's wild, but it is music. The program is terrific -- "Hey, Hey," "Scarborough Fair," "For Alisse Beethoven," "Sheila," "Pop Corn" (the last three Kingsley original) and even "Nowhere Man" and "Paperback Rider (sic)" by Lennon-McCartney. It has harpsichord, much organ and a whole lot of other synthetic instrumental sounds, and we love it.

A true masterpiece of Moog/Electronic pop genius circa 1970, including the original, "Pop Corn" If you don't know, Gershon Kingsley was the Arranger for the 2 (Jean Jacques) Perrey and Gershon Kingsley LP's released on Vanguard in 1965 and 66. The arranger's job is to literally write out the music on what are known as "Charts" for each player to play, that becomes the tune/music. Whether it be Jazz, Blues, R and B, Soul, Vocals, String Orchestra, Opera or Moog and Ondioline Instrumentals:) You have seen players with music stands and the music on paper on the music stand, right ? Those are the *charts* The arrangements on this record are great GREAT. Great tunes done up right with a big, fat and bold sound. Not tinny at all whatsoever. Add drums, electric guitars, bass, percussion AND MOOG and you have a true killer rekkid. No lie. |
